Alchemy
Alchemy was the chemistry of the Middle Ages.
It's main concern was how to discover ways to transmutate base metals into precious metals as gold or silver.
Among other places, alchemy has been practiced in Ancient Egypt, India, China and Europe.
Today some people still find this protoscientific dicipline to be profound.
